This past week, my very talented Physiotherapist introduced me to the concept of having acupuncture while she did the left shoulder passive range of motion movements. Being a lover of acupuncture, I took her up on the offer and asked what she had in mind.
We are working on the left shoulder (compression fracture injury) and there is the Stomach Meridian that runs from the outside of the second toe up to the top of the face. We wanted to experiment with a point on the lower leg to see if the shoulder could be activated into giving me a bit more extension.
The points were located, the acupuncture needles inserted and within 2 minutes, my Physiotherapist had my arm cradled and supported in her hands, lifting my left arm as I lay on the physio table. I noticed that the shoulder seemed to glide more smoothly. I wasn’t looking at the arm at the time we were doing this. I was staring at the ceiling, maintaining a relaxed awareness so not to impede the stretch of the shoulder as I always do. She lifted my arm into extension 3 more times and when she was done, told me that we got another 15 degrees out of it with the acupuncture needles in!
Why is this such a big deal? It’s because 15 degrees is 15 more than I had! I’m all for efficacy and how fast and how well can we move things along in the most gentle fashion. It’s because I have a goal and I want to have enough extension and strength in that shoulder to be able to go out on our sailboat for Swiftsure weekend, even if it means motoring! Ok, that’s beside the point.
Being able to mobilize and get a joint working quicker is beneficial for the patient, quality of life, and family! It’s an aspect that helps move us through the emotional barriers we experience in the healing process.
Acupuncture connects the energetic dots of our body. It’s like hydro poles. The energy has to move freely along the power line for the source of energy to get where it needs to go to do the job. Energy communication can get blocked up anywhere in our meridians. There are always deficiencies and excesses throughout. The trick is to utilize acupuncture to balance the body, the meridian and use it to our advantage.
Physio and acupuncture are complimentary. Ask for it! This is not an either/or situation. I encourage you to use all you can in your self care to empower the healing process, balancing and preservation of your health and wellness.
Here’s to your energized wellness!
